Toreros Use Big Seventh Inning to Beat San Diego State

USD got the best of San Diego State in a game between the city’s two Division I baseball teams with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a one-run deficit and win, 10-6.

With the bases loaded and none out in that inning, SDSU reliever Rich Juarez hit Charlie Setzer to force in the tying run. Kevin Herde drove in another run by dropping a bloop single to right, and Tony Moeder cleared the bases with a double to left.

For SDSU (3-3), Jason Ledford drove in four runs with a triple and a single.

USD improved to 1-2.

Point Loma Nazarene College scored twice in the bottom of the eighth and once in the ninth to defeat Redlands, 5-4.

The winning run was scored on Rodney Wilkins’ squeeze bunt.

PLNC improved to 2-3. Redlands is 0-1.

INDOOR SOCCER

Former Socker Rod Castro, who now plays for the Baltimore Blast, was named to the East squad for Thursday’s Major Soccer League All-Star game as a replacement for injured Dallas defender Troy Snyder, out with a deep shin bruise. Dallas’ Richard Chinapoo will replace teammate Wes McLeod (strained calf muscle), and the West team learned that it will be without Wichita’s Dale Ervine (left knee tendinitis).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene shot only 37% from the field in a 62-56 loss to Christ College Irvine at Golden Gymnasium. Charlie Simmons had 18 to lead the Crusaders (11-13). Five players scored in double figure for Christ College (13-13).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Hawaii topped San Diego State, 6-15, 15-12, 15-11, 15-6, at Peterson Gym. SDSU’s Todd Yarbrough led both teams with 31 kills as SDSU fell to 1-9, 0-7. Hawaii improved to 4-3, 4-2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene College moved into a tie for second place of both District 3 and the Golden State Athletic Conference with Christ College of Irvine with a 68-52 defeat of Christ College at Point Loma.

Rochelle Lightner scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for PLNC (11-2, 6-2) and teammate Stacee Eggers scored 15 and pulled down 15 rebounds.

UC San Diego jumped out to a 16-0 lead en route to a 64-45 victory over Whittier. UCSD, which shot 57% in first half, improved to 11-8, 7-9.
