Alhambra : Lawn Bowling on the Way
The City Council approved a contract Monday with an Australian firm to install a synthetic bowling green at Almansor Park. It will be the first installation of the Henselite playing surface in the United States.
Director of Leisure Services William Kinman told the council that the surface is widely used in Australia and other countries where lawn bowling is popular, but it has never been used in the United States.
Kinman said Superior Grasse Synthetic Sports Turf of Victoria, Australia, is offering the surface to the city for $72,000, a 10% discount.
The project will be paid for by funds from the California Park Bond Act of 1988. City Manager Kevin Murphy said no city money will be used for the project.
