Washington 72, Banning 36--Guard Brandon Martin scored a game-high 32 points to lead the Generals (19-4) to an easy 4-A victory on their home court.

Banning, which competes in the same conference as Washington, trailed, 28-19, at halftime. Marcel Crain led the Pilots with 12 points.

Westchester 82, Granada Hills 63--The Comets opened defense of their 4-A title with a victory at Westchester.

Westchester (24-2), The Times’ top-ranked city team, was led by guard Jason Sanders with 16 points. Lorenzo Ball added 13 points, followed by James Gray with 12 and Maurice Robinson with 10.

Granada Hills finished 3-19.

Carson 59, Kennedy 53--William Thomas scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Colts to a 4-A victory at home.

Rudy Washington and Joe Wyatt added 20 and 18 points, respectively, for Carson (18-7).

Kennedy ended its season at 17-9.

Fairfax 93, Gardena 62--Senior guard Burt Harris, who is headed to USC in the fall, scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Lions to a 4-A victory at home.

Gardena trailed, 42-33, at halftime but was outscored, 51-29, in the second half.

Robert Foster added 16 points for Fairfax (15-9).

Taft 74, San Pedro 72--Adam James scored on an inbounds play with two seconds remaining to lift the Toreadors to a 4-A victory at Taft.

Senior guard Casey Sheahan scored a game-high 31 points to lead Taft (18-4). Raymond Tutt led San Pedro (13-12) with 27 points.

Fremont 81, Marshall 37--The Pathfinders, the top-seeded team in 3-A, breezed in their first-round playoff game at home as 13 players scored.

Senior guard Todd Whitehead led Fremont (27-3) with 20 points. The Pathfinders led, 28-15, at halftime, then pulled away in the fourth quarter when they outscored the Barristers, 36-11.

Tony Tavekanyana led Marshall with 15 points.
