HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER : Torrey Pines Girls Mourn Classmate’s Death Before Playoff Win

Share

Dennis Costello showed up at Torrey Pines High School on Wednesday ready to deliver a special pregame speech to his top-seeded girls’ soccer team.

Instead, before his team’s 6-0 victory over Serra, Costello’s speech centered on a more serious subject as he was met by a distraught group still thinking about a classmate who had been killed during the night.

Andrew Jordan Carter, 15, a sophomore at Torrey Pines, was killed after riding his skateboard into an intersection at Del Mar Heights and Carmel Country Road at 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday. He died at 12:25 Wednesday morning at Scripps Memorial Hospital.

Costello, wary that Poway had been upset a day earlier and San Dieguito had won in a shootout in the Divison I playoffs, was going to tell his team to not get complacent. But things changed when he got to school.

“I got there today and there were tears; it was very emotional,” Costello said. “I thought that they would be ready to play. Instead, they were still upset. They were crying and everything, so I had to try to deal with that.”

In the Division II quarterfinal victory over Serra (6-9-4), freshman Summer Harrison, who scored 36 goals this season, added three more for Torrey Pines (21-2-2). Ashley Hanson scored on penalty kick, and Brook Calders headed the ball off a corner kick from Hanson. Samantha Easton also scored.

Hanson finished with two assists. Sara Ogilvie, with four saves, earned the shutouts.
