COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Jackson, Walters Lift Antelope Valley to Regional Playoff Victory, 96-86

Freshman forward D. J. Jackson scored 34 points and pulled down 19 rebounds and teammate Chris Walters added 20 points and 10 assists to lead Antelope Valley College to a 96-86 win over visiting Golden West on Saturday in a first-round game of the Southern California regional basketball playoffs.

The win improved the Marauders’ record to 20-12; Golden West fell to 14-19.

In other men’s regional playoff games:

Valley 81, Oxnard 71--Art Kirksey scored 16 of his 24 points in the first half as Valley (19-13) pulled away from visiting Oxnard (18-14).

Russell Baldwin added 19 points for Valley. Shawn Talley scored a game-high 28 points for Oxnard.

Rancho Santiago 77, Glendale 64--Sophomore Beau Hossler scored 16 points as Rancho Santiago (22-9) won its 13th consecutive postseason game in the past three seasons.

Fred Amos added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Rick Swanwick had 13 for the Dons.

Alfonso Pule scored 21 points for Glendale (13-16).

Canyons 108, Palomar 89--Six players scored in double figures for host Canyons (25-6).

Reggie Bell had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Jason Joynes and David Langley each added 17 points for Canyons.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Golden West 89, Antelope Valley 74--Cossette Smith and Jennifer Harney each scored 20 points as Golden West (27-5) advanced to the state championship tournament for the sixth year in a row. Charley Johnson scored a career-high 28 points for Antelope Valley (23-8).

Paula Page, the leading scorer for Antelope Valley with a 21.6 points-per-game average, was held to three points in the first half as Golden West took a 49-38 lead. Page finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Cal State Northridge 66, Stanford 49 1/2; UC Irvine 46; USC 45 1/2--The Matadors won seven of 19 events to outdistance two traditional Pacific 10 Conference powerhouses in a quadrangular meet at USC.

Ryan Vierra led Northridge by winning the shotput (53 feet, 1/4 inch) and placing second in the discus (167-8) and fourth in the hammer (179-1).

Sasha Vujic set a Northridge record in 3,000 meters, winning in 8 minutes 14.64 seconds.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 20-11, Claremont-Mudd 3-2--The Kingsmen (12-0, 6-0) collected 42 hits en route to a sweep of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Claremont-Mudd.

In the first game, Bob Farber went three for five with three runs batted in and Darrell McMillin hit his ninth home run in 11 games.

In the second game, Jim Fifer and Jay Lucas each had five hits and three RBIs and Farber went four for six with three RBIs.

Pierce 10, Santa Monica 6--Robby Welles had three hits and two runs batted in and Brian Smith added two hits and three RBIs for visiting Pierce (10-1-1, 2-0) in a Western State Conference game.

Chris Brown (3-0) went the distance, scattering eight hits and allowing only one earned run. Erik Martinez and Josh Smaler each had two hits for Pierce.

Valley 9, Santa Barbara 6--Mike Murray’s bases-loaded double in the bottom of the eighth broke a 6-6 tie to lead host Valley (6-9, 1-1) to the WSC win.

Steve Knez went three for four with two runs scored and three RBIs for Valley. Murray was two for three and Carlos Olmos was two for four.

Moorpark 11, Cuesta 9--Dave DeMaio had three hits and three RBIs for host Moorpark (7-3, 2-0) in a WSC game.

Jeff Sommer and Daryl Hernandez each had three hits for Moorpark.

Mission 8, El Camino 5--Jose Gallegos’ two-run triple with one out in the seventh gave Mission (2-6-1) a 6-5 lead and started the Free Spirit to a nonconference win at El Camino.

Eric Duncan, who earned his first save, allowed one hit and struck out two in two innings.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 3, Toledo 2--Beth Calcante hit her third homer of the season to spark the Matadors in the second round of the Nevada Las Vegas tournament. It was Calcante’s school record-tying sixth home run.

Cal Lutheran 6-2, Whitter 2-0--The Regals improved to 4-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
