The basketball season finally came to an end for Glendale-area schools, but not before the La Canada and Ribet Academy boys’ basketball teams advanced to the second round of the state tournament.

La Canada, which won its first Southern Section 3-A Division championship March 7, defeated La Jolla, 58-36, in the first round of the Southern California regional March 10 before falling to defending Division III state champion Estancia, 55-51, on Thursday.

Against Estancia, Jimmy Evans scored 19 points and had eight rebounds for La Canada, which finished 27-3.

Ribet Academy, the defending Division V state champion, lost to Faith Baptist, 65-53.

Lydell Hill scored 21 points for Ribet, which finished 21-7.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College men’s tennis team completed the first half of its season with a 7-2 record.

The Vaqueros have been led all season by No. 1 singles player Ashot Smbatyan, a sophomore who is undefeated. Freshman Brian Wildason, who plays No. 4 singles, is also undefeated.

Glendale plays at Cuesta today.

The Glendale baseball team, which has started its season by going 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the Western State Conference, continues WSC play today at Pierce College.

The Vaqueros play host to Bakersfield on Saturday and College of the Canyons on Tuesday.

COLLEGES

Occidental’s Ed Bedford will compete this weekend in the NCAA Division III swimming championships at Buffalo, N.Y. Bedford, a senior from Etna, N.H., qualified in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.23 seconds; the 100-yard freestyle (46.86), and the 100-yard butterfly (50.53).

The Occidental College baseball team has struggled to a 6-11 overall record and 1-8 record in the Southern California Intercollegiate Conference.

Last week, the Tigers defeated Wisconsin-Superior, but were swept in a doubleheader by Colorado College.

Occidental’s lone SCIAC victory was a 13-10 decision over La Verne, a game in which catcher Bob Kennedy had three hits and drove in three runs.

Kennedy is batting a team-high .321 with a home run and 13 runs batted in.

Occidental will be idle until March 27 when it plays Macalester College.

The Occidental women’s cross-country team was selected as one of the top academic teams in Division III. The Tigers were honored by the Cross-Country Coaches Assn. for their 3.21 cumulative grade-point average during the fall semester. Occidental ranked 12th academically among Division III schools.

Stephanie Francis, a junior forward on the Occidental women’s basketball team, was selected first-team All-SCIAC by conference coaches. The 5-foot-10 Francis averaged 11.9 points and six rebounds for the Tigers.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Craig Harzmann, Glendale--Harzmann, a senior, won the 100 meters and also helped Glendale win the mile relay at the Burbank Invitational track meet on Saturday.

Harzmann won the 100 in 10.77 seconds. He ran an anchor leg of the mile relay in 50.2 as the Dynamiters finished in 3 minutes 35.59 seconds.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Sergie Becceril, Glendale--Becceril, a freshman, won the 5,000 meters as Glendale completed its Western State Conference dual meet season at Santa Barbara.

Becceril finished in 16:27.3 as the Vaqueros swept the 5,000.

Santa Monica won the meet with 55 points. Glendale was second with 47, Santa Barbara had 46 and College of the Canyons finished with 38.

WHERE THEY ARE NOW

Develle Walker, Cal State San Bernardino--Walker, a junior guard who played at Los Angeles City College, was selected first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. in basketball. Walker averaged a conference-leading 22.9 points and was named CCAA player of the week three times.

MISCELLANY

Five girls from the Glendale YMCA qualified for the U.S. Junior National swimming championships that will be held March 24-28 at Dallas. The girls are Heather Ballard, 17, and Gretchen Ballard, 13, who will compete in freestyle events; Cori Miller, 17, who will compete in the breaststroke, and Ashley Flanagan, 14, and Jennifer Abbey, 13, who will compete in the backstroke.
