SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Reggie Jones scored 19 points to lead No. 2 Virginia Union over Bridgeport, 100-75, in the NCAA Division II basketball championship game Saturday.
The game was the last for Bridgeport, which is dropping varsity sports because of financial problems.
Virginia Union’s team celebrated only briefly before walking over to the Bridgeport bench to console the Purple Knights. The crowd gave the Bridgeport (28-7) team a standing ovation when it received its second-place trophies.
The loudest cheers were for Lambert Shell, the leading scorer in Bridgeport history with 3,001 points. Shell suffered a badly sprained instep during the Purple Knights’ quarterfinal victory and played most of the final in pain Saturday, scoring only 11 points.
Virginia Union (30-3) also won the title in 1980.
