Titan Softball Team Opens NCAA Regional Play Today
Cal State Fullerton’s softball team will attempt to end a two-year postseason losing streak against Cal State Long Beach during the NCAA Regionals, which begin today at the Titan Sports Complex.
The three-team regional begins at 1 p.m., when 15th-seeded Long Beach (36-29) plays 16th-seeded Toledo (39-20). Fifth-seeded Fullerton (43-18) will play the loser of Game 1 at 3 p.m. and the winner of Game 1 at 5 p.m.
The double-elimination tournament continues at 1 p.m. Sunday, and a second game will follow if necessary. The winner advances to the College World Series, scheduled for May 21-25 at Oklahoma City.
The Titans, who haven’t advanced to the College World Series since 1987, were eliminated by the 49ers in the 1990 and ’91 regionals but have won three of four games from Long Beach this season.
Fullerton is led by pitcher Tiffany Boyd (30-6, 0.76 earned-run average, 290 strikeouts), shortstop Denise DeWalt (.383, 29 runs, 20 RBIs) and third baseman Marci White (.279, 18 RBIs), who were named to the All-West Region team Friday.
Former Trabuco Hills High infielder Linda Lunceford leads Long Beach with a .325 average and 24 RBIs, and pitcher/first baseman Stacy Van Essen is batting .279 with 30 RBIs. Toledo, which lost to Fullerton twice this season, is led by designated hitter Sherri Magnuson (.346, 26 RBIs).
