Junior Leofa

School: Los Amigos High
Sport: Football
Position: Fullback/linebacker
Class: Junior
As the only sophomore on the Los Amigos varsity last season, Leofa led the Lobos in tackles from his middle linebacker position. So no one was surprised that he had two sacks and assisted on five tackles Thursday in Los Amigos’ 34-20 opening-game victory over Estancia. But it was on offense that Leofa made the biggest splash: amassing 207 total yards and scoring all five of Los Amigos’ touchdowns. Leofa handled the ball 11 times (six rushes for 91 yards, five receptions for 116 yards). Leofa, who is 5 feet 7, 170 pounds and has lifted 280 pounds in the bench press, gets his yards with a combination of quickness and strength. Last spring, he won his weight class in a Garden Grove League weightlifting competition. Thursday, he scored on runs of one, 10, 53 and 11 yards and ran a screen pass from quarterback Ape Tuato 75 yards for a touchdown.
Other top performers:
Chris Draft, who rushed for 187 yards and scored three touchdowns in Valencia’s 38-21 victory over Villa Park.
Jonathan Hall, who had two interceptions for Fountain Valley in a 10-7 victory over Dana Hills. The second ended Dana Hills’ final rally attempt.
Jared Overton, a Newport Harbor cross-country runner who won the senior division race (14 minutes 56 seconds for three miles) at the Buena Invitational and helped the Sailors to a second-place finish.
Todd Wines, a Santa Ana Valley water polo player who scored 32 goals in four Valencia tournament matches. Wines scored a match-high five in the Falcons’ 12-9 loss to Montebello in the title match.
