Weeks Resigns as Costa Mesa Girls’ Basketball Coach

Jim Weeks, who coached the Costa Mesa High School girls’ basketball team to the Southern Section Division III-A championship in 1989-90, said Tuesday he has resigned for personal reasons.

“I think the team and I are in different places,” Weeks said. “For them to be successful, I think they are better off with a different coach. . . . It would create a lot of problems and tensions if I stayed.”

Weeks, who would not specify the differences between him and the team, compiled a 91-70 record during six seasons as coach of the Mustangs. He guided Costa Mesa to the Pacific Coast League title last season and to the section Division III-A semifinals, where the Mustangs lost to eventual champion Rancho Alamitos, 75-74, in overtime.

In 1990-91, Weeks led the Mustangs to the III-A finals, but Playa del Rey St. Bernard defeated Costa Mesa, 73-71.

Weeks will remain at Costa Mesa as a math teacher and as head of the school’s math department.
