Kelly, born Andrew Kelly, earned his nickname because of the way he enjoyed rustling newspapers as a toddler. His father thought Andrew might make a good cub reporter, and Cub soon became Cubby, the name he answers to almost exclusively. These days, Kelly is getting into newspapers for different reasons. Friday, in his first start on offense this season, Kelly rushed for 233 yards and three touchdowns in Sonora’s 20-8 victory over Whittier La Serna. Before the game, Kelly, playing mostly defense, had intercepted two passes and been the Raiders’ leading tackler from his strong safety position. But Coach Mark Takkinen, seeing a need for better rushing offense, decided Kelly would be more valuable there. He had three runs of more than 30 yards. “We reversed his role, and it seems to have helped the team,” Takkinen said.

Other top performers:

Jared Overton, who won the three-mile race in 15 minutes 14 seconds to lead Newport Harbor to a 27-29 victory over Saddleback in a Sea View League cross-country meet.

Binh Tran, who rushed for six touchdowns--which tied an Orange County record--and 311 yards--his third consecutive game of more than 200 yards--in Costa Mesa’s 44-0 victory over Calvary Chapel.

Ernie Wilson, who had 114 yards rushing, two receptions for 42 yards and a kickoff return for one of his four touchdowns in El Modena’s 48-10 victory over Loara.

Ryan Wolter, who intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble and forced another in Trabuco Hills’ 25-22 victory over Capistrano Valley.
