Torrey Pines Coach Ed Burke knew all about the power and speed of San Pasqual running backs DeSale Wallace and Jamon Buggs, who had combined to rush for more than 1,500 yards.

But Burke didn’t know much about Eagle quarterback Ryan Hill.

He does now.

Hill flew past the Falcon secondary for 121 yards and two touchdowns and even passed for 68 yards as fourth-ranked San Pasqual defeated 10th-ranked Torrey Pines, 42-28, Friday night for sole possession of first place in the Avocado League.

Third-ranked El Camino (6-1, 3-1) scored but three points against Torrey Pines (5-2, 3-1) five weeks ago, but San Pasqual amassed 496 yards against a defense that had been allowing only three points a game.

“The last thing I wanted was to get into a track meet with them,” Burke said. “They took it to us. They outhit us and that’s embarrassing for us as a football team.”

San Pasqual Coach Mike Dolan agreed.

“I thought we dominated the line of scrimmage from the third quarter on. Our backs weren’t getting hit for the first four yards.”

And when Buggs, Wallace and Hill were getting hit, they usually carried a defender or two for a couple more yards. Buggs ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns. Wallace had 95 yards and a touchdown.

But it was Hill who keyed the Eagles’ offense with his ball handling and his speed around the corners.

The biggest play of the game?

“The quarterback running down the sideline was it for me,” Burke said. “We didn’t think we could shut down the two backs, but we thought we could do better with the quarterback.”

Said Dolan: “Ryan stepped up.”

Entering the game, Hill had rushed for 167 yards and passed for 37 on two completions in 14 attempts. But Friday he was four for seven with an interception.

The other Ryan, Ryan Lynch, threw for 185 yards and two touchdowns on nine-of-17 passing. Lynch also threw an interception that led to San Pasqual’s first touchdown.

But the Falcons’ biggest turnover came when they were driving for a tying touchdown with nine minutes left in the game. Lynch threw a completion to Kevin Winters, but he was hit by Albert Casillo on the spot and Jeff Moss recovered for San Pasqual.

Two plays later, Hill scampered 35 yards down the right sideline to close out the scoring.

Torrey Pines trailed at half, 21-14, but it came back to take a 28-21 lead in the third quarter on a Josh Brown 10-yard run and a Lynch to Kevin Winters 26-yard touchdown pass. But San Pasqual drove 80 yards in eight plays, the big play coming on a Hill to Casey Wetzel 34-yard pass that got San Pasqual out of a second and 15. Buggs capped the drive with a five-yard scoring run.

“That guy is a horse,” Burke said. “It was just a frustrating game.”

Hill’s running wasn’t the only surprise for Torrey Pines.

“Our coaching was worse than I thought,” Burke said.
