Santa Barbara Hands Harbor Its First Loss, 34-14

The Harbor College football team’s hopes of an unbeaten season were dashed Saturday night by Santa Barbara, as the visiting Vaqueros used two big fourth quarter plays to help score a 34-14 Western State Conference victory at Harbor.

Harbor, which rallied for 17 points in the fourth quarter last week to defeat Compton, 24-21, trailed 17-7 going into the final quarter on Saturday.

But the 10th-ranked Seahawks (6-1, 5-1 in conference play and 1-1 in the Northern Division) were first victimized by a 45-yard touchdown run by Santa Barbara’s Claude Torrey that gave the Vaqueros a 24-7 lead with 11 minutes 25 seconds remaining.

On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Harbor quarterback Gabe Sadi was intercepted by Clint Peterson, who returned the ball 30 yards for a touchdown to give Santa Barbara a 31-7 lead.

Santa Barbara City improved to 4-3 and 3-3 in conference play and is 1-1 in the Northern Division.

Harbor was without leading rusher Ira Moreland, who has a sprained ankle. Harbor gained only 60 yards in its first 22 plays, which included two turnovers.

Santa Barbara opened the game with an onside kick, which was recovered by the Vaqueros’ Ross Headley on the Vaqueros’ 48-yard line.

The Vaqueros’ took a 6-0 lead seven plays later on a nine-yard run by Jon Keiser.

Dan Harnish kicked a 23-yard field goal with 4:23 left in the first quarter to finish a 10-play, 65-yard drive that gave the Vaqueros a 9-0 lead.

Santa Barbara extended its’ lead to 17-0 on a 54-yard run by Shawn Simon and a two-point conversion run by Jarrett Johnson.

The Seahawks scored with 28 seconds remaining in the first half. The 11-play, 60-yard drive ended on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Gabe Sadi to Nevin Elliott. Fullback Shawn Simon gained 35 yards on five carries during in the drive.

Sadi scored Harbor’s final touchdown on a five-yard run with 52 seconds left in the game.

El Camino 35, Cerritos 25--Ivan Wilson ran for 185 yards and two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead the Warriors to a Mission Conference Northern Division road victory.

Cerritos led, 25-14, at halftime, but was held to only 59 yards in the second half. The Falcons (4-4, 0-2) led, 25-20, going into the fourth quarter before Wilson took control.

Wilson, a sophomore, scored on runs of one and 19 yards. El Camino is 6-1, 1-0.
