Valley College quarterback Joe Mauldin set a Western State Conference single-season total offense record. Mauldin, a sophomore, passed for 1,905 yards and rushed for 796, giving him a total of 2,701 yards. Jeff Barrett, a former Burroughs High standout, was the previous record-holder with 2,636 yards at Santa Monica in 1990.
Football: Howard Blackwell of Valley scored 138 points, placing him in a tie for third on the WSC’s all-time list. Record-holder Freddie Bradley of Moorpark scored 180 points in 1990. . . . Sophomore Nick Estrada of Moorpark took over sixth place on the conference’s single-season punt return chart. He had 20 for 259 yards this season.
Basketball: In the 22 seasons Pete Cassidy has been coach at Northridge, the Matadors are 14-8 in season openers. Fresno State’s 77-67 victory over Northridge on Tuesday dropped the Matadors’ record in openers at the Division I level to 0-3. . . . Fresno State leads its series with Northridge, 22-4, but before Tuesday the schools had not met since 1974.
