More than time has passed since the first game between the Peninsula and South Torrance boys’ basketball teams.

“What happened before was forgotten,” Peninsula Coach John Mihaljevich said.

The result, however, was the same as Peninsula defeated South, 72-51, in a nonleague game Wednesday night at South to snap the Spartans’ school-record 12-game winning streak.

Matt Acres had a game-high 25 points and Tim Akins had 16 for Peninsula (9-5), which defeated South, 64-48, in the Pacific Shores tournament in December.

Peninsula led by as many as 17 points in the second quarter and 49-41 entering the fourth quarter. South (12-2) closed to 51-45 on a short hook shot by Kyle McIntosh with six minutes 16 seconds to play.

But Acres scored six of the Peninsula’s next 10 points to help the Panthers open a 61-49 lead with 3:13 to play.

McIntosh had 18 points and eight rebounds and Jimmy Williamson, who was held to a season-low nine points in the first game against Peninsula, had 17 points.

“They were talking a lot and showing off,” Akins said. “It’s a great rivalry. We wanted to prove we were still better.”

Peninsula demonstrated that from the start.

The Panthers, who led, 40-26, at halftime, raced to an 11-3 lead in the first quarter and broke the game open with a 16-0 run for a 33-17 lead midway through the second quarter.
