Tailback Fahali Campbell of Camarillo High and quarterback Larry Bumpus of Oxnard, two of Ventura County’s most prolific offensive players the past three years, have made commitments to attend Oregon State next fall.

Nate Thompson, an offensive lineman for Hart, also made a commitment to attend Nevada.

Campbell (5 feet 11, 175 pounds) last season became the first player in county history to rush for more than 2,000 yards. He gained 2,285 yards and scored 21 touchdowns while leading the Scorpions to a second-place finish in the Marmonte League and the semifinal round of the Southern Section Division III playoffs.

Campbell was selected The Times’ All-Ventura County back of the year.

“They had a certain attitude up there that I want to be around,” said Campbell, who also was offered a scholarship to Northern Arizona. “I was really pleased with their athletics. It seemed like the place I wanted to be.”

Campbell rushed for a three-year total of 3,818 yards and 32 touchdowns on 622 carries. He averaged 6.14 yards per carry.

Bumpus, a three-year starter, was more prolific as a runner than passer. Bumpus posted career totals of 1,807 yards and 24 touchdowns on 292 carries. Last season, Bumpus rushed for 887 yards and 10 touchdowns, and passed for 316 yards and five touchdowns.

Bumpus also was recruited by Arizona State, Colorado and San Diego State.

“They said I have a good chance to play as a freshman, that I can get in there right now and compete,” Bumpus said. “I like that.”

Thompson, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound offensive tackle, was selected first-team All-Foothill League. “I feel great about my decision; Nevada is the school I’ve had on my mind the most,” Thompson said. “This is a chance for me to go to college and play Division I football, which is what I’ve always dreamed about.”

Thompson also was recruited by San Diego State and San Jose State.

In junior college developments, five players have signed or committed to four-year schools.

Defensive end Avo Avetysan (6-3 1/2, 230) and wide receiver Billy Parra (5-11, 178) of Valley have committed to San Diego State and Cal State Chico, respectively.

Pierce wide receiver Daniel Alexander (6-0, 175) signed with Montana last month, and former Brahma standouts LaShante Parker and Charles Gietzen signed with Eastern Michigan and Memphis State, respectively.

Avetysan had 78 (61 solo) tackles, including a team-high 12 sacks for Valley to earn All-Western State Conference South Division honors.

Parra had 17 receptions for 256 yards and two touchdowns for Valley, and Alexander had 17 catches for 310 yards and five touchdowns.

Parker (5-10, 185) gained 1,366 yards and scored 17 touchdowns for Pierce during the 1991 season to earn All-WSC South Division honors. Gietzen (6-5, 315) was named to the All-WSC South Division second team in 1991.
