Tran Leads Costa Mesa Running Game in Rout : Mustangs: Senior rushes for 217 yards, four touchdowns. Crenshaw has 110 yards in 55-0 victory over Ocean View.

Costa Mesa Coach Myron Miller said his offense has only two plays--the pitch and the trap. Friday night the Mustangs ran them to perfection.

Binh Tran rushed for 217 yards and four touchdowns and Dwayne Crenshaw added 110 yards and one touchdown as Costa Mesa rolled over Ocean View, 55-0, in a nonleague game at Newport Harbor.

“We just ran them down,” Miller said. “We have bigger, stronger and faster kids and there was really nothing they could do. We ran our pitch and our trap and we even opened it up and threw a couple times.”

But it was the Costa Mesa rushing attack that did the job Friday night. When Tran, a senior, wasn’t running the ball, Crenshaw was. Crenshaw, a transfer from Edison who was starting his first varsity game, averaged more than 15 yards per carry before leaving the game at halftime with a slight shoulder separation.

With Crenshaw out and Tran given the night off early in the second half, Steve Owen took over. Owen ran for 57 yards in nine carries and scored three touchdowns.

Even the junior varsity players recently called up ran wild. Juan Vaca entered late in the fourth quarter and ran for 56 yards in eight carries.

Costa Mesa’s other heralded transfer, wide receiver Charles Chatman, was kept in check. Miller said he wanted to use Chatman more, but the running game was working so well, there was no need to throw. Chatman was limited to one catch of 21 yards, although he did have an interception and a 26-yard punt return.

While the Costa Mesa offense was racking up the yardage, the defense made sure Ocean View did not.

The Costa Mesa defense held Ocean View to 58 yards rushing and shut down the passing game, holding it to no completions and intercepting two passes.
