SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Six players scored touchdowns for Sylmar High in its 46-0 Valley Pac-8 Conference victory over visiting Poly on Friday.

Mark Reynosa scored the first and last touchdowns for the Spartans (7-1-1, 6-0 in East Valley League play). In between, James Seidler, Floyd Chalk, Tyrone Crenshaw, Durell Price and Dwight Patton also reached the end zone.

“That’s the way it’s been,” Sylmar Coach Jeff Engilman said. “When you have teams that key on Tyrone . . . everyone else is going to be open.”

Crenshaw rushed for 146 yards in 15 carries.

Sylmar’s passing attack rounded into form in the Spartans’ 34-point second half. Eddie Lopez threw for 120 yards in the final two periods and finished eight of 13 for 163 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Poly (3-6, 3-3) was led by Gerrod Taylor, who rushed for 59 yards in 19 carries.

The Parrots showed some willingness to gamble when they went for--and converted--a fourth-and-one play from their 24-yard line on their first possession.

After picking up another first down, however, Poly lost the ball at its 39 when quarterback Kejun Douglas fumbled on a pitchout try.

Two plays later, Reynosa ran 35 yards with just under eight minutes remaining in the first quarter for a 6-0 Spartan lead.

Sylmar increased its lead to 12-0 on a 39-yard pass from Lopez to Seidler with 7:27 left in the second quarter.

Twice in the first half, Poly penetrated inside the Sylmar 20 but was unable to score. Gerzon Camey left a 32-yard field-goal attempt short late in the first quarter, and Patton intercepted a Douglas pass early in the second quarter.
