SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION II-AA BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Punto’s Shooting Leads Trabuco Hills Past Woodbridge

Sophomore guard Nick Punto scored 23 points to lead Trabuco Hills to an 85-70 victory over Woodbridge in the opening round of the Division II-AA boys’ basketball playoffs Friday at Trabuco Hills High.

Punto made seven three-pointers for the Mustangs (22-5).

Junior forward Rob Warnick added 18 points and senior Ryan Karnoff scored 17 and grabbed 12 rebounds for Trabuco Hills.

Senior guard Chris Talbott scored 15 points to lead Woodbridge (11-15).

Senior guard Adam Libby added 14 points and connected on three three-pointers for Woodbridge.

Trabuco Hills led 44-31 at halftime and moved out to 67-47 advantage after three quarters.

But Woodbridge closed the gap to 76-68 on Libby’s three-pointer with 2:45 left in the game.

But Trabuco Hills went on a 9-0 run to move ahead, 85-68, with 40 seconds left in the game.

Trabuco Hills will face Huntington Beach in the next round.

In other Division II-AA games:

Huntington Beach 76, Loara 45--Tony Gonzalez scored 30 points to lead the Oilers to a first round home-court victory. Huntington Beach (18-9) led 39-21 at the half and then outscored Loara 28-3 in third quarter. Matt Malmquist added 11 points for the Oilers. Loara is 12-14.

Ocean View 55, El Monte Mountain View 53 (OT)--Kevin Johnson had 16 points and eight rebounds and Mike Carney scored 16 points for Ocean View (14-14), which will face Glendora in the second round Tuesday.
