Brianna Kanogata’a scored 18 points to lead Oxnard Rio Mesa to a 55-44 victory over Villa Park in a first-round playoff game Saturday at Villa Park.

Rio Mesa (18-7) advanced by shutting down the Spartans’ offense during a five-minute span early in the fourth quarter. Villa Park (21-4), which never led, rallied to tie the score at 28 on Michelle Jacquot’s basket with about two minutes left in the third quarter. But the Spartans did not score another basket until Silvia Salgado scored with 3:53 left to play. By then, Rio Mesa had a 10-point lead, 43-33.

Villa Park, the Century League champion, could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way. Michelle Miyake led the Spartan offense with 15 points, including three three-point baskets. Maureen Skehan added 13 points and five rebounds.
