Either practice is over-rated or Jamaal Chase of Quartz Hill High is in for a superb senior season.

Chase, fourth in the boys’ long jump and ninth in the triple jump in last year’s state track and field championships, won both events with personal bests in the Sunkist Invitational at the Sports Arena on Saturday night.

Chase bounded 49 feet 3 inches in the triple jump after leaping 23-9 in the long jump.

The triple jump is the best high school mark in the nation this year and the long jump is fifth-best.

Both efforts came on the third and final attempts for Chase, who has yet to do any jumping or bounding drills in training.

“All he’s been doing is strength and speed work,” Coach Don Crimin said. “He hasn’t done anything technical. No drills, no nothing.”

Chase fouled on his first two attempts in the long jump before improving his personal best by two inches on his final effort, one he characterized as a “safety jump.”

“I took it real easy on that jump,” Chase said. “I was just trying to get a fair jump in so I was surprised when I went that far.”

Chase began the triple jump with a foul and improved to 46-8 in the second round before exploding to 49-3 on his third effort. His previous best was 48-9.

“I just knew that it was way out there,” Chase said. “It felt good.”

Chase was not the only performer from the region to produce a national high school best for the year. James Lincoln of Birmingham won the boys’ high jump at 6-10 to defeat favored Jeremy Fischer of Camarillo, who cleared 6-8.

Lincoln, fifth in last year’s state meet, cleared the winning height on his first attempt before missing three times at 7 feet.

Dolores Tuimoloau of Channel Islands won the girls’ shotput with a mark of 41-7, Mike Wenz of Canyon won the boys’ seeded 880-yard run in 2 minutes 0.63 seconds and Jason Medearis of Hart finished second in the boys’ 50-meter high hurdles in 6.86 seconds.
