BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : Villa Park

Share

Coach: Jeff Ehrlich (21st year).

1993: Second in the Century League; eighth at Division I championship meet.

Key returners: Kevin Bobzien, Sr.; Matt Cornue, Sr.; David Keil, Sr.; Kenny Klonowski, Sr.; Paul Nguyen, Sr.; Brian Pharris, So.; Andrew Smallman, Sr.

Key newcomers: Rob Buckel, So.; Brett Evans, Jr.

Outlook: Villa Park and Foothill have owned the league since 1978, with Foothill winning the title 10 times to Villa Park’s five. In the 1990s, Villa Park won the first two years, Foothill the past two, including the Knights’ 92-78 advantage in the dual meet last year. Expect another another dogfight this year, both coaches predict. Cornue, who was first at the section meet in the 100-yard freestyle and second in the 200 free, is considered one of the best swimmers in the county. Matt and his brother, Peter, a sophomore, were all-league water polo players. All-American Matt had the 12th-fastest 200 free and the 22nd-best 100 free in the nation in 1993. Freestyle and backstroke are strong events for the Spartans; breaststroke is a weak link.
