BOYS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : El Toro

Share

Coach: Jeff Grosse (16th year).

1993: Second in the South Coast League; fifth at Division I championship meet.

Key returners: Terence Dougherty, Jr.; Brian Kimbell, Jr.; Kevin McIntyre, Sr.; Brian Pearce, Sr.; Ian Pyka, Sr.; Jay Reaves, Sr.; Tyce Routson, Sr., diving; Brent Stoll, Sr.; Brandon Stout, Sr.; Matt Tilton, Sr.

Key newcomers: Allen Basso, Jr.; Aron Brown, Sr.; Derek Flenniken, Jr.; Bill Pinciroli, Sr.

Outlook: Loss of backstroker John Simmons, now at SMU, is a big one. He was the only Charger to win an individual title at the section meet (200 free), but El Toro has the experienced Pyka, Reaves and Tilton to pick up much of the slack. El Toro can earn valuable points through diver Routson, the youngest member of the U.S. national team, who missed last year’s section meet because of a national team commitment. Water polo players Stout, The Times Orange County’s Player of the Year, and Pinciroli, the Southern Section Player of the Year, add speed and depth.
