GIRLS’ SWIMMING AND DIVING ’94 / Six Teams to Watch : El Toro
- Share via
Coach: Sheri Ross (25th year).
1993: South Coast League champion; Division I champion.
Key returners: Kenesha Jespersen, So., diving; Katie Lowes, So.; Katie Simmons, So.; Amy Sloan, Jr., diving; A.J. Walters, Sr.; Becky Wilshire, Jr., diving.
Key newcomers: Christie Kennedy, Fr.
Outlook: The top three places at the Division I championship meet were a clean sweep for the talent-heavy South Coast League, and El Toro led every step of the way. The Chargers won a school-record eighth league championship and every meet--dual, invitational, postseason--they entered, including their first-ever section championship. This year, the finish could be eerily similar, though Ross said depth might be a concern. The most prominent name missing is Michelle Perry, winner of three consecutive 100-yard section freestyle titles, who now swims for UCLA. As much publicity as Capistrano Valley divers get, El Toro has some threats of its own. Sloan, Jespersen and Wilshire finished second, eighth and 12th at the section meet, and all are back.
