1994 PREP BASKETBALL ALL-STARS : BOYS’ ALL-STARS : This Class of Players Brought Quality of Play to New Heights

San Gabriel Valley high schools have produced some outstanding basketball talent in past seasons, but the class of players from the 1993-94 season might someday be recognized among the area’s best ever.

Bassett was the only team to win a Southern Section title, but several teams advanced deep into the playoffs, including San Dimas, which made its third consecutive championship game appearance.

“The teams and the players in the San Gabriel Valley seem like they’re getting better and better each year,” La Canada Coach Tom Hofman said. “And many schools have more than one excellent player.”

Cameron Murray of Glendora and Jeremy Veal of San Dimas lead a list of 10 players selected to The Times’ 1994 San Gabriel Valley All-Star Team. The players were selected based on nominations from area coaches. Every boys’ and girls’ high school basketball coach in The Times’ San Gabriel Valley circulation area received a ballot asking for nominations from their team and others. They were also asked to nominate a coach of the year.

The selected players, along with their parents and coaches, will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Holiday Inn in Pasadena. Winners of the San Gabriel Valley player and coach of the year awards will be announced at the breakfast.

A closer look at the all-stars:

Donald Guyton (Pasadena)--Guyton, a repeat selection to The Times’ team, is the latest in a line of talented Bulldog guards that includes Michael Cooper and Michael Holton. An All-Pacific League selection, Guyton averaged 18.5 points and 3.2 rebounds. He is being recruited by several NCAA Division I programs.

Glenn Ray Johnson (Wilson)--The Miramonte League featured a plethora of explosive scorers this season. Johnson, a senior forward, often took over games with his shooting skills. He averaged 28.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists as the Wildcats advanced to the playoffs.

Victor Lesley (Damien)--The 6-foot-4 forward is a repeat selection to The Times’ team. He led the Spartans and impressed opposing coaches with his versatility, competitiveness and all-around skills. Lesley averaged 24 points and 6.8 rebounds last season.

Cameron Murray (Glendora)--Murray, The Times’ 1992 San Gabriel Player of the Year as a sophomore, makes his third appearance on the team. Generally regarded as one of the nation’s best guards, Murray averaged 26 points, four rebounds and six assists for the Tartans. He will play for USC next season.

Shamario Richard (Nogales)--The only junior on the 1994 team, Richard will be considered the top returning guard in the area next season. Richard was named Sierra League most valuable player after averaging 27 points, four rebounds and nine assists for the Nobles.

Jecarl Riggins (Blair)--A three-time All-Rio Hondo League selection for the Vikings, Riggins capped his career by averaging 22 points and five assists in leading Blair into the playoffs. Ballhandling and shooting skills are Riggins’ strengths.

Jeron Roberts (Charter Oak)--Roberts made a habit of taking over games last season with his shooting and rebounding skills. During some stretches, he was literally unstoppable. The 6-4 guard/forward averaged 33.2 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He will play next season at Wyoming.

Eric Sanchez (La Canada)--La Canada Coach Tom Hofman describes Sanchez, the Rio Hondo League most valuable player, as the best player in school history. Sanchez averaged 20.7 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Spartans and led them to the Southern Section III-A semifinals. He played three seasons of varsity basketball and helped the Spartans accumulate a record of 30-0 in Rio Hondo League play.

Jeremy Veal (San Dimas)--Veal, a 6-3 guard, is a repeat selection to The Times’ team. Veal concluded an outstanding career by averaging 30.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists for the Saints, who advanced to the Southern Section III-A championship game for the third consecutive season. An outstanding shooter and all-around player, Veal will play at Arizona State next season.

Braden Weber (St. Francis)--Weber, a 6-8 forward, developed into an outstanding front-court player in his final season and helped lead the Golden Knights to a 22-6 record, one of the school’s best-ever seasons. Weber averaged 14 points and 11 rebounds.
