PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Loyola Beats Fountain Valley With 3 Scores in 5 Minutes

Loyola rallied for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat Fountain Valley, 21-7, in a nonleague football game Friday at Huntington Beach High.

The Cubs (1-0) scored three touchdowns in a span of just more than five minutes in the final quarter to come from behind against the Barons (0-1).

Fountain Valley scored its touchdown when Joey Rozek caught a 25-yard pass from quarterback Chris Ponchak with 6:20 left in the third quarter. Ponchak, a standout pitcher for Fountain Valley last spring, was 12 for 25 passing for 136 yards and threw two interceptions.

Loyola went up, 14-7, when quarterback Dyle Spielbuhler narrowly avoided a sack and then completed a 52-yard touchdown pass to Dan Farmer with 8:30 left in the game.

Spielbuhler was 8 for 16 passing for 120 yards and one interception.

Fountain Valley fumbled on its next possession. Ponchak was hit while scrambling and Loyola’s Bryan Dunn recovered the ball at the Fountain Valley 20.

Four plays later, Mike Vanis scored on a one-yard run off tackle to put the Cubs ahead, 21-7.

Loyola tied it, 7-7, on its first possession of the fourth quarter. Mike Ellison broke away for a 41-yard scoring run down the left sideline with 11:16 left in the quarter.

The first half featured three missed field goal attempts. Loyola’s Mark McDonald missed a 32-yard try on the final play of the half. The Cubs mishandled the snap on an earlier try.

Devin O’Day had two interceptions for Fountain Valley.
