SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After being placed on two years’ probation Wednesday by the City Section for holding an illegal practice, the Sylmar High football team showed no ill effects Friday night. The Spartans crushed Chatsworth, 47-7, in a City Section nonconference game at Chatsworth.

“The kids were actually relieved and we were happy the kids weren’t punished,” Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said. “It’s been kind of a dramatic week.”

Sylmar (2-0) took all the drama out of the game early by moving to a 20-7 lead behind the play of senior wide receiver Devon Young, who caught three passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score.

Sylmar’s Durell Price carried 13 times for 135 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Greg Marquez completed 9 of 13 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns.

Marquez and Young connected on a six-yard scoring play that capped Sylmar’s opening drive. Chatsworth came right back, however, as running back Antwon Nelson broke free on a 60-yard touchdown run. Nelson gained 95 yards in seven carries.

Sylmar dominated the rest of the game. Young scored on a five-yard end-around, then hooked up with Marquez on a 67-yard touchdown pass play for a 20-7 lead.

Chatsworth quarterback David Hummell, who completed one of 11 passes in the first half, fell on an errant snap in his own end zone for a safety.

In the second half, the Spartans scored on a 57-yard run by Price, a three-yard rush by Lorenzo Garcia and a 70-yard interception return by Eddie Lopez.
