SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Antelope Valley High football team hopes recent history repeats itself tonight.

In the third week of the season last year, the Antelopes suffered their first loss, falling to Bakersfield, then ranked No. 3 in the state. The next week, Antelope Valley rebounded to defeat Loyola, ranked sixth in the state, 15-14.

Last week, Antelope Valley lost to Bakersfield, again ranked third in the state, 35-13, and must face eighth-ranked Loyola in a nonleague game at 7:30 tonight at Glendale High.

Antelope Valley had been ranked 16th in the state before the Bakersfield game, but dropped out of the latest poll.

Loyola (3-0) posted an impressive 28-0 victory over previously unbeaten Saugus last week. Quarterback Kyle Speilbuhler completed 11 of 13 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns against the Centurions.

Speilbuhler has completed 27 of 41 passes for 409 yards and four touchdowns. Dan Farmer has 13 receptions for 229 yards and two touchdowns.

Mike Ellison leads the Cub running game with 234 yards in 32 carries.

“We’re going to have to play great for all four quarters if we want a chance to win,” Antelope Valley Coach Brent Newcomb said. “We got a little break last year.”

Last year, Antelope Valley was held to minus-six yards in the first half before scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat Loyola for the first time in school history.

Before allowing five touchdowns against Bakersfield, Antelope Valley (2-1) had not yielded a point in victories over Hesperia, 8-0, and West Bakersfield, 14-0.

Tailback Jermaine Lewis leads Antelope Valley with 217 yards in 46 carries. In last year’s game, Lewis gained 108 yards in 20 carries, including a 62-yard run.
