BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Balanced Scoring Is Key to Katella’s Championship

Carlos Romero scored 14 points to help Katella to a 57-33 victory over Huntington Beach Friday in the championship game of the La Quinta tournament.

LaByron Clayton, Clyde Barnwell and Mike Pahl added 10 each for Katella (8-0). Clay Chilcott led Huntington Beach (2-1) with 11 points.

Clayton was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

In the third-place game:

Laguna Beach 69, La Quinta 64--Brandon Bloch scored 18 points and Gordon Osborn added 10 for Laguna Beach (5-2). Jason Gondringer scored 19 points for La Quinta (2-2).

In the consolation championship:

Westminster 60, Garden Grove 55--Scott Tushizaki, Khien Tieu and Aaron Boorman scored 15 points each for Westminster (4-4).

In the Laguna Hills tournament:

Laguna Hills 64, Dana Hills 52--Richard Gonzales, Colin Bishopp and Mike Scaglione each scored 12 points for Laguna Hills. Donald Myers scored 14 points for Dana Hills (2-2). Laguna Hills will face Mission Viejo in the finals at 7 tonight.

In the other semifinal game:

Mission Viejo 65, Rialto 51--Four Diablos scored in double figures, led by senior guard Ty Kalklosch’s 18 points, to power Mission Viejo (6-1). Rialto is 5-2.

In a consolation game:

El Modena 67, El Toro 66--Chris Goodwin (16 points) scored with five seconds left for El Modena. Travis Senik scored 23 points for El Toro (2-4).

In the Costa Mesa Kiwanis tournament:

Buena Park 54, University 52--Towan Oliver’s two free throws with 30 seconds left won the game for Buena Park (4-3). Oliver and Rueben Gasso each had 17 points.

Los Amigos 51, Saddleback 46--Kit Ranaphoulee scored 16 points for Los Amigos (1-4), which led, 20-5, after the first quarter. Mike Ochoa scored 14 points for Saddleback.

Calvary Chapel 89, Anaheim 56--Kevin Falconer scored 16 points, including 10 of 11 from the free-throw line, and had eight assists for Calvary Chapel (6-1). The Eagles outrebounded Anaheim, 32-19. Anaheim is 2-4.

In the La Jolla County Day tournament:

Capistrano Valley Christian 62, Avalon 54--Senior forward Tamer Ghosheh scored 34 points and had nine rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian.

In the La Quinta tournament:

Marina 74, Liberty Christian 52--Dan Perna scored 18 points and Andy Meyer 16 for Marina (1-3) in a consolation game. Bob McClung scored 20 for Liberty Christian.

In the third round of the Glendora Tournament:

Rowland Heights Rowland 79, Brea-Olinda 58--Tony Parker had 19 points and Henry Mayberry added 16 for Rowland. Eric Repp scored 17 points to lead Brea-Olinda (4-2).

In the Cerritos Valley Christian Tournament:

Loara 56, Rosemead Bosco Tech 40--Mark Moses scored 10 points for Loara (3-3).

In nonleague games:

Estancia 51, Irvine 44--Dane Plock scored 14 points and Zack Richardson added 13 for visiting Estancia (5-1). Darrell Parker had 19 points for Irvine (1-5).

Villa Park 57, Orange Lutheran 52--Jason Hutson had 18 points and 14 rebounds for visiting Villa Park (3-1). Jason Kemner scored 10 points to lead Orange Lutheran (2-3).

Ocean View 81, Foothill 55--Dan McDonald scored 31 points and David Wilson added 17 points and 14 rebounds for visiting Ocean View (3-3).

Troy 78, Valencia 58--Guard Jeff Sand scored 27 points to lead the visiting Warriors (3-3). Robert Smith had 17 points and nine rebounds for Valencia (2-4). Troy led, 58-52, with six minutes to play, then went on a 12-0 run.

Canyon 52, Corona Centennial 44--Forward Jeff Llewellyn scored 14 points to help the Comanches (2-4) win at home. Teammate Tim Tynan added 12 points and Adam Hoover and Ryan Walker each scored 10.

El Dorado 63, Sunny Hills 61--Dustin Miller’s 10-footer with 10 seconds left gave host El Dorado the victory. Miller finished with 28 points for the Golden Hawks (4-2).

Cypress 77, Western 42--Chad Boberg scored 25 points and Brett Boulton added 16 for host Cypress (5-1).

Santa Margarita 60, Edison 51--Dennis Keane had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Santa Margarita (5-0), which outscored Edison, 30-10, in the first half.

Los Alamitos 80, Long Beach Millikan 76 (OT)--The Griffins’ Corey Johnson had 22 points, including three three-pointers. Jeremy Vandervoet had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Chris Glass added 15 points for Los Alamitos (5-1).
