PREP ROUNDUP : Morales’ Goal Gives Esperanza Overtime Soccer Victory Over Grant

Irene Morales’ header in the third minute of sudden death gave Esperanza a 4-3 victory over Van Nuys Grant in pool play of the Vanguard Cup girls’ soccer tournament Friday at El Modena High.

Esperanza’s Tammy Lyon scored the tying goal with 10 seconds left in regulation. Jamie Bumstead scored two goals for Esperanza.

In other pool-play games of the Vanguard Cup girls’ tournament:

Belmont Notre Dame, 3, Sunny Hills 1--Demerese Salter scored a first-half goal for Sunny Hills (1-3). Notre Dame is 4-1-1.

Capistrano Valley 2, El Toro 1--Erin Conners and Liz Delgado scored for Capistrano Valley (3-2). Jenny Davis scored for El Toro (2-1-2).

El Modena 2, San Pedro 0--Kaylee Whitfield scored two goals and goalie Marie Dillon had four saves for El Modena (4-1).

In the first round of the Magnolia girls’ soccer tournament:

Sonora 7, Buena Park 0--Heather Gibson scored four goals for Sonora (1-1-1).

Magnolia 4, Santiago 0--Shannon Myers, Janet Nghiem, Sofia Diaz and Becky Young each scored to lead host Magnolia (2-1).

Aliso Niguel 4, Savanna 0--Lauren Franson scored two goals for Aliso Niguel (4-0).

In boys’ nonleague soccer:

Savanna 2, Kennedy 2--Danny Arreguin scored with about five minutes left to tie the score for host Kennedy (1-0-2). Luis Sanchez scored two first-half goals for Savanna (2-0-1). Nick Poan scored Kennedy’s other goal.

Fountain Valley 6, Ocean View 0--Adam Novak scored three goals and Scott Hainlen had five saves and a shutout for the Barons (5-0), who have not allowed a goal this season.

Capistrano Valley Christian 5, St. Margaret’s 2--Matt Davenport scored three goals to lead visiting Capistrano Valley Christian (1-3). Patrick Moss and Ryan Downey each scored one goal and Jeremy Blumberg recorded 13 saves for St. Margaret’s (1-2).

Santa Margarita 5, Marina 0--Brian Peisner had two goals to lead Santa Margarita (6-0-1). Craig Steinmetz made 12 saves for visiting Marina (1-1-3).

Villa Park 2, Sonora 1--Kris Fisher’s goal 12 minutes into the second half gave Villa Park (1-2-1) the victory. Brett Polakoff gave Villa Park the lead with a first-half goal, but Sonora’s Aaron Jenkins tied the score, 1-1, with a goal early in the second half. Sonora is 2-1.

Westminster 4, Anaheim 2--Wayne Huelskamp scored twice and John Levenshus broke a 2-2 tie with a second-half goal for host Westminster (2-1-1).
