GIRLS’ BASKETBALL / BUENA TOURNAMENT : Alemany Works Overtime to Defeat Buena for Title

Carly Funicello’s six-foot turnaround jump shot with 41 seconds left in overtime gave Alemany High a 53-52 victory over Buena in the championship game of the Buena tournament Saturday night.

Funicello, the tournament’s most valuable player, had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (4-0), the state’s second-ranked team.

Teammate Samantha Rigley scored 12 points, while Kelly McKay added 11.

Buena, which lost its tournament for only the second time in 18 years, was paced by Kori Sebek’s 19 points. Guard Eboni Conley added 10 for the fifth-ranked Bulldogs (2-1).

The Indians had a chance to win it in regulation, when Rigley was fouled with six seconds left and the score tied, 49-49. However, Rigley missed her first free throw in seven attempts.

The Bulldogs had two possessions after Funicello’s overtime winner. However, both times Buena missed its shots and both times Funicello rebounded.

Newbury Park 52, Hart 37--Jann Thorpe had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Newbury Park (6-1) to third place. Teammate Julie Wastell added 11 points and seven rebounds. Renee Intlekofer scored 10 points.

LaCresha Clark paced Hart (2-2) with 10 points.

Chatsworth 55, Ventura 53--Tynitra Wilson had 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Chancellors (4-2) won the consolation championship. Jodi Borenstein scored 12 points and Shanna Sasaki added 11 points for Chatsworth.

Jenie Chenoweth and Christine Franklin each scored 12 points for the Cougars (1-2).
