ROUNDUP : Valley Squeezes Orange Coast

Maria Fulay had 18 points and 11 assists to lead the Valley College women’s basketball team to a 81-67 victory over Orange Coast in a first-round game of the Orange Coast tournament Friday night at Costa Mesa.

Fulay made eight of 14 shots for the Monarchs (8-3). Valley made 18 of 29 shots in the first half to take a 39-22 lead over the state’s sixth-ranked team.

Maggie Hause had 16 points and Erika Kusek added 12 for the Monarchs, and Nikki Hamilton added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

Orange Coast is 11-3.

Santa Clara 95, Northridge 51--The Broncos (2-3) set a school record for with 10 three-point baskets in the victory at Santa Clara.

Santa Clara’s point total was a team high for this season and the second most points ever scored by a Santa Clara team.

Lisa Vaillancourt came off the bench to score 11 points for Northridge (0-6).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 101, Shasta 84--The Marauders used an 11-0 run midway through the second half to extend a 63-61 lead in the second round of the Sequoias tournament.

Swingman Orville Turner scored 39 points for Antelope Valley (8-5). Brandon McIntyre added 14.

Andre Billings scored 32 points for Shasta (7-7).

L.A. City 87, Valley 77--Vernon Simmons had 16 points and 10 rebounds, but the Monarchs couldn’t upset L.A. City in the semifinals of the Pasadena City tournament. Mack Cleveland added 13 points for Valley (10-4).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Agoura 56, Camarillo 54--Junior guard Brian Laibow made nine of 12 shots and finished with a 25 points for the Chargers (4-2, 2-0) in a Marmonte League victory.

Laibow made five of six three-point shots. Nathan Kaup had 17 points for Camarillo.

Birmingham 78, University 53--Jamal Marks scored eight of his 20 points in the first quarter as the Braves jumped to a 24-5 lead in the third-place game of the Hamilton tournament. David Redmond scored 19 points and Scott James added 16 for Birmingham (4-4).

Simi Valley 74, Newbury Park 70--Dan Van Etten scored four of his 19 points in overtime after the Pioneers rallied from a 10-point deficit with under two minutes left in regulation. Anthony Tauriello added 13 points for Simi Valley (5-1, 1-1).

Brent Bush made seven three-pointers to finish with 21 points for Newbury Park (2-4, 0-2).

Van Nuys 75, Bell 68--Onaje Longmire had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wolves to the consolation championship of the Hamilton tournament. Ben Birken added 14 points and seven rebounds.

L.A. Baptist 62, Bishop Diego 55--Kevin Aust scored 17 points and Russ Brumpton added 12 for the Knights (5-2) in a consolation game of the Carpinteria tournament.

Canyon 62, Fountain Valley 42--Senior guard Greg Minor scored 26 points, including 10 of 10 free throws and four three-point baskets, as the Cowboys (4-3) advanced to the Arroyo Grande Tournament championship game. Canyon trailed, 29-28, at halftime but Fountain Valley (4-4) made only five of 26 shots in the second half. Canyon will play Victor Valley in the tournament final at 4:30 today.

Faith Baptist 64, Maricopa 33--Freshman point guard Tim Greer had 15 points and seven steals and freshman forward Emmanuel Evans added 14 points and 10 rebounds as Faith Baptist (2-2) coasted to a lopsided intersectional victory.

Greer made three three-point baskets in the first quarter as Faith Baptist opened a 21-7 lead and was never threatened.

Burbank 55, Northview 51--Junior guard Matt Baker scored 11 of his 22 points in the second quarter in a consolation semifinal of the Glendora tournament.

Holy Martyrs 42, Kilpatrick 35--Senior guard Johnny Panjarjian scored 37 points for Holy Martyrs (2-2) in a nonleague game.

Palmdale 76, Chaminade 66--Mike Yang led Chaminade with 20 points and eight assists, but the Eagles (4-2) committed several key turnovers in the nonleague game at Chaminade.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

North Hollywood 69, Louisville 40--Anna Celaya scored 22 points and had 12 steals to lead North Hollywood (3-1) in a Simi Valley tournament first-round victory.

Simi Valley 70, Canyon 42--Tawnee Cooper scored 16 points to lead the Pioneers (9-2) in the opening round of the Simi Valley tournament.

Kennedy 60, Bell-Jeff 53--Tami Ross had 19 points and 20 rebounds and Tamaya Morris added 17 points to lead the Cougars (5-3) in the first round of the Simi Valley tournament.

Grant 63, Cleveland 15--Bahaneh Maani scored 22 points and Kristin Kiley-Boynton added 15 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals as the Lancers (3-2) ran away with a consolation semifinal game of the Fairfax tournament.

Oak Park 55, Bishop Diego 18--Alexa and Alisha Valavanis combined for 23 points, 15 steals and 11 rebounds in a consolation game of the Santa Paula tournament.

BOYS SOCCER

Calabasas 3, Fillmore 0--David Appel scored two first half goals as Calabasas won a nonleague match at Fillmore. Calabasas (7-1) has won six in a row, including three consecutive shutouts.

Thousand Oaks 3, Channel Islands 2--Tyler Rice scored two goals and Diego Schoeffer had one as the Lancers (4-3, 1-1) earned their first Marmonte League victory.
