BOYS’ BASKETBALL / HART TOURNAMENT : Canyon’s Last-Second Shot Sinks Antelopes

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The first question was laughed off, brushed aside by Canyon High’s Greg Minor.

Of course, he said with a smile, he was going to be the one to put up the last-second shot in a tie game against Antelope Valley.

But the second question--how did he hit an off-balance three-pointer through a double team as time ran out to defeat the previously unbeaten Antelopes, 69-66, in the first round of the Hart tournament--was a stumper.

“Don’t know,” Minor said. “Help of God, I guess.”

What was clear was that Minor finished with 38 points and, at times, loaded the entire Canyon team on his back.

With the Antelopes (8-1) leading, 35-23, and looking at another victory against another over-matched opponent, Canyon (5-4) went on a 27-3 run. Minor was responsible for 21 of the points, with 17 of his own and two assists.

It didn’t help Antelope Valley that three starters were benched because of foul trouble.

“We just couldn’t get in rhythm, couldn’t get into the flow,” said Coach Tom Mahan, whose Antelopes scored a season-low five points in the third period. “Tough to play with three starters out.”

Glendale 75, Littlerock 71--Joe Kurdoglanyan scored 23 points and James Fuller added 20 and 19 rebounds for Glendale (7-3).

John George had 26 points and 14 rebounds for Littlerock (6-5).

Simi Valley 58, Canoga Park 56--Junior forward Scott Schnetzler scored a game-high 22 points and had nine rebounds and five steals to pace the Pioneers (8-1).

Hart 59, San Fernando 52--Mike Posey scored 20 points to lead the Indians (6-5) to a first-round victory. Dwayne Lucas led San Fernando (3-6) with 20 points.
