SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The script went perfectly for the Alemany High girls’ basketball team.

The Indians badly wanted a rematch with Woodbridge, the team that knocked them out of the State semifinals last season.

Alemany played its part splendidly, winning 20 of 24 games. Woodbridge played along, winning 28 of 29.

However, the Warriors had the last edit on that script Friday night in a 53-45 victory over Alemany in the Southern Section Division II-AA championship game at the Pyramid.

The Indians fell behind the state’s No. 1-ranked team, 8-1, in the first quarter.

“We did come out a little shaky,” said senior guard Kelly McKay, who scored two points before fouling out.

Samantha Rigley scored 19 points, but 6-foot-4 center Carly Funicello, Alemany’s leading scorer, was held to four points by Woodbridge center Angela Burgess.

The Indians scrambled back, but could not pull even.

They trailed, 32-28, after three quarters, before the Warriors broke off an 8-2 streak for a 40-30 lead.

Woodbridge led, 45-35, with under two minutes left in the game, when Alemany freshman Kelli Kobayashi caught fire.

She made four of five three-point shots in the last 91 seconds--her only 12 points of the game--but it wasn’t enough.

Woodbridge made five of six free throws to wrap up its second Division II-A title in a row.
