Fullerton’s Moore Wins, Advances in Junior Tennis

Top-seeded Ryan Moore of Fullerton defeated Joey Zupan of Los Angeles to advance to the second round of the boys’ 16 division at the Southern California Junior Sectional at Neal Machander Tennis Center in Santa Ana.

Moore beat Zupan, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, and will play B.K. Chang of Orange, who defeated Zafar Fisher of Ventura, 7-6, 6-4.

Other county players to advance in the boys’ 16 division include Christopher Chung of Fullerton and Brandon Fallon of Dana Point.

In the boys’ 18 division, Trent Miller, Joseph Gilbert and Ryan Hollis advanced to Round 2. Top-seeded Taylor Dent of Newport Beach and David Lingnan of Irvine advanced in the 14 division.

In the girls’ 16 division, Shannon Wilkins of Anaheim, Katey Becker of Orange, Faye De Vera of Villa Park and Nichole Kojina of Huntington Beach advanced.

Brandi Freudenberg of Orange advanced in the 18 division, as did Michelle Bray of Laguna Beach and Natalie Exon of Irvine.

The Mission Viejo Shamrocks beat the Oregon Soccer Club, 3-1, to win the Far West Regional title in the girls’ under-16 club soccer championships in Boise, Ida.

Sydney Leonard of Dana Hills High, with an assist by Ami Aylor of Santa Margarita, scored the first goal early in the first half. Jennifer Brick of Trabuco Hills, scored the Shamrocks’ second goal. Newport Harbor’s Jill Nelsen assisted on the goal. Megan Orach of Marina scored in the second half.

Mission Viejo, representing the western states, will compete in the national championships, July 27-29 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The California All-Stars beat the Oklahoma first team, 12-5, in the third game of the Sunbelt High School All-Star Classic in Shawnee, Okla.

Greg Kuzmic of La Quinta hit a home run and was two for three with two runs batted in for the California team (2-1), which is second behind Florida in the round-robin tournament.

Kyle Evans and Brian Martineau, two key members of Rancho Santiago’s State championship baseball team last spring, have signed minor league contracts with the Texas Rangers, Dons’ Coach Don Sneddon said.

Evans, a sophomore first baseman who was an All-State selection but wasn’t drafted, signed as a free agent. Martineau, a sophomore right-hander, was an 11th-round pick.

Evans and Martineau were assigned to the Hudson Valley Renegades of the New-York Penn League.
