OUTLOOK

The Vikings posted a winning record last season, but all their losses came against league opponents. With only 26 varsity players suiting up this fall, there are no guarantees of winning this year. “If things go right we may surprise people,” said Rehling, a first-year coach who might have to start four sophomores. “But with our numbers and experience levels, we won’t have an advantage on any team we play. To make the playoffs will require us playing beyond ourselves. Playing in the Sunset League with this group of kids appears to be crazy.” Rehling is so strapped that Williams (981 yards, 10 touchdowns), his best player and an all-league performer, will also see time in the secondary. It might be hard for Rehling not to think of the future; 50 kids signed up for freshman football, the biggest turnout at Marina in 10 years.
