Edison did what it needed to do against Capistrano Valley--contain running back Malaefou MacKenzie--and it still wasn’t enough.

MacKenzie rushed for only 54 yards, but he had two touchdowns to lead the sixth-ranked Cougars to a 13-7 nonleague victory over Edison in front of 2,500 Friday at Capistrano Valley.

Capistrano is 2-0; Edison is 1-1.

MacKenzie scored on touchdown runs of two and 44 yards; the latter broke a 7-7 tie with 8 minutes 57 seconds left in the first half.

“I got good blocking on the left side--there was a little crease,” MacKenzie said. “And I got good blocking downfield.”

MacKenzie, 6 feet, 210 pounds, flattened Ryan Tombrello (5-10, 170) at the line of scrimmage, bouncing off Tombrello, finding that crease and scurrying downfield.

Tombrello spent the next minute gathering his senses.

Charger Coach Dave White was proud of his team, especially his defense, which surrendered only 118 yards to the Cougars--32 in the second half.

Said MacKenzie: “I give them credit; they did a great job. They shut down the run, but we got it done. We had a little something in us.”

MacKenzie’s first touchdown tied the score with 19 seconds left in the first quarter. The 42-yard drive’s key plays were Charlie Landrigan’s four-yard run on fourth-and-one while the defense was keying on MacKenzie, and then Landrigan’s 25-yard carry on the next play.

Edison had taken the early lead 1:50 into the game when Alex Forero scored on a 74-yard run.

The Chargers finished with 213 yards of offense--including 54 passing by sophomore Jeff Grady on their final drive of the night.

Grady replaced starter John Perez (four for eight, 40 yards), who was taken by ambulance to Mission Community Hospital. Perez was injured after an incomplete pass with 3:08 left in the third quarter.

“I was closest to him; he went down on his head and neck and had two guys on top of him,” Referee Jerry Kress said. “He was indicating he couldn’t feel anything on his right side.”

Down by six, Edison’s final drive began on the 17; Grady connected twice to Mike Buckingham for 19 and 18 yards, and once to Forero for 17.

Finally, at the Capistrano Valley 17 on fourth and seven, his pass over the middle was intercepted by Tyler Plewe and returned 44 yards.

Grady finished four for 10 for 72 yards and two interceptions.

“He’s like the other kids on this team,” White said. “He’s got a big heart. Basically, he’s our sophomore kids’ quarterback; he never gets any reps with us.
