COLLEGE NOTES : UCI’s Puritz to Step Down After Season

Share

UC Irvine women’s volleyball Coach Mike Puritz announced Tuesday that he will quit after this season to spend more time with his family.

Puritz, 43, will remain at the school as the director of recreation instruction, a post similar to one he has held in conjunction with volleyball since last spring.

“I’m done with coaching,” Puritz said. “My mother passed away in August and that kind of got me thinking. It made me reflect on what I was missing out on. Coaching at the Division I level consumes your life and it definitely had consumed me. I wanted a more normal lifestyle.”

Puritz is 212-271 in 16 seasons. The Anteaters made it into the NCAA tournament in 1988. Irvine is 4-14 this season, 1-10 in the Big West.
