PREP WATER POLO : Marina Gets Share of League Title With Victory

Ninth-ranked Marina clinched a share of its first league title since 1989 by defeating No. 10 Esperanza, 8-7, in a Sunset League water polo game Wednesday at Marina High.

Lance Banuk gave the Vikings (19-5, 4-0) the victory when he scored off a two-on-one with 15 seconds remaining.

Banuk had a game-high four goals for Marina, which can clinch the title outright with a victory against Edison Wednesday at Golden West College. Esperanza is 11-7, 3-1 in league.

In another Sunset League game:

Huntington Beach 10, Edison 6--Sean Plotkin scored three goals for visiting Huntington Beach (11-11, 1-3).

In the Century League:

Foothill 25, Canyon 5--Brian Brown scored six goals and Kevin Brantley added five for host Foothill, the top-ranked team in the county. Adam Metzger and Rob Arroyo each added four goals for Foothill, which led, 13-2, at halftime.

Villa Park 20, Santa Ana Valley 4--Brian Pharris scored five goals, Joey Pacelli four and Nick Pacelli three for second-ranked Villa Park (21-3, 4-0), which led, 10-2, after the first quarter.

Orange 10, El Modena 9 (OT)--Andrew Velin scored with 10 seconds left in overtime to give Orange (11-12, 1-3) the victory. Jeff Gorman, who scored the Panthers’ first overtime goal, had five goals and Velin four for the Panthers.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 18, Kennedy 2--El Dorado (17-7, 4-0) clinched a share of the league title. Kendall Benson had four goals and Brett Benson and Luke Byward had three each for the Golden Hawks.

Cypress 16, Loara 8--Erik Sandvig scored eight goals and Mark Slezcove added six for host Cypress (11-8, 3-1). Mike Timanus had five for Loara (2-2 in league).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 12, Fullerton 5--Rashad Captan had three goals for visiting La Habra (14-11, 4-0). Fullerton is 1-3 in league.

Buena Park 8, Sunny Hills 7 (OT)--The host Coyotes (7-17, 2-2) trailed, 6-5, until Steven Kim scored with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Adrian Vanciu, who had three goals, and Carl Comer, who had two, each scored in overtime for Buena Park. Sunny Hills is 7-17, 2-2.

Sonora 9, Troy 7--Jason Bollin scored four goals for Sonora (2-2 in league), which led, 5-3, at halftime. Andrew Ruga scored three goals for Troy (1-3 in league).

In the Golden West League:

Tustin 16, Saddleback 8--Mike Foley and Leonardo Martinez each scored three goals for host Tustin (17-13, 3-2). Johnny Roy scored six goals for visiting Saddleback.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 31, Savanna 5--Junior Brent Reimer scored a career-high 11 goals, seven in the first quarter, and host Brea set a single-game record for goals. Brian Doherty and Taylor Lowe had five goals each for Brea, which is ranked sixth in the Southern Section Division VI.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 13, Irvine 4--Fourth-ranked El Toro (18-5, 4-0) captured its first Sea View League championship. Shaun Souza scored four goals for the Chargers, who led, 7-2, at the half.

Corona del Mar 12, Santa Margarita 4--Carter Weir scored five goals and Alex Batley added four for host Corona del Mar (6-9, 2-2), which led, 7-0, at halftime. Corona del Mar outshot Santa Margarita, 32-15.
