Dow Can Finish on Another High With Chatsworth in City Final

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Nobody is going to claim that Chatsworth High girls volleyball Coach Bud Dow has extrasensory perception.

But it is interesting to note that inside the Chancellors’ preseason prospectus--prepared by Dow--is the following statement:

“This team should have a very solid chance to repeat as City champions.”

The Chancellors (25-1) have repeated their run to the City Section 4-A championship match.

They even notched a semifinal victory over Palisades, the team the Chancellors beat in last year’s final.

Next up: Top-seeded Chatsworth faces second-seeded Roosevelt tonight at 8 in the final at Occidental College.

“It’s going to be a fun match,” Dow said.

It will be very festive for the Chancellors if they keep up their recent play.

Chatsworth outside hitter Jennifer Joseph, who had 15 kills against Palisades, is averaging 5.67 kills a game in the playoffs. Middle blocker Nancy Vincent, who had 13 blocks against Palisades, looked strong in only her third match since partially tearing ligaments in her left knee.

In the 3-A final at 5:30 p.m., upstart Poly plays Van Nuys, which won titles in 1993 and 1992.

Led by Marlena McLurkin and Latoya Seeley, fourth-seeded Poly (12-4) upset top-seeded Sylmar in the semifinals.

Second-seeded Van Nuys (12-3), the only team to beat Chatsworth this season, counters with Jasmeen Burton and Angie Eckmier.

In a Southern Section Division II final, Harvard-Westlake faces Bishop Montgomery at 4:30 p.m. at Cypress College.

The second-seeded Wolverines (22-1) were swept by the top-seeded Knights (17-1) earlier in the season.

“It was the ugliest match you’ve ever seen in your life,” said Harvard-Westlake Coach Jess Quiroz, who expects a different disposition from his players.

“Their focus was all wrong. They just wanted to win and forget all the stuff in between. We’re beyond that now. We’ve kind of taken care of that.”

The Wolverines have been getting solid play from every position.

Christine Bohle and Lesley Coben each are averaging 7.67 kills in their last three matches.
