Hart Turns Some Unusual Twists Into a 7-1 Victory Over Verdugo Hills

A triple play and a twisted ankle helped the Hart High softball team to a 7-1 victory over Verdugo Hills on Thursday in the first round of the Hoover tournament.

Melissa Harrison had three hits and four runs batted in for the Indians (6-2) after replacing Vanessa Raschella--who was injured in a first-inning collision at first base.

The triple play came with Hart leading, 2-0, in the second inning when the Dons (3-2) had runners on first and third.

Kim Wood hit a line drive to pitcher Mary Colleran, who doubled the runner off first. Anna Nordhagen threw to catcher Danni Socha to catch Verdugo Hills’ other runner trying to score.

Chatsworth 7, Monroe 0--Kristy Faciane had three hits, including a two-run home run, for the Chancellors (3-0) in a nonleague game at Monroe (1-3).

Burroughs 2, Louisville 1--Olivia Sullivan singled home the winning run in the fourth inning for the Indians (4-3) in a nonleague game.

Saugus 8, University 1--Jamie Gillies had seven strikeouts in four innings for the Centurions (6-1) in a second-round game at the Laguna Hills tournament.

Paraclete 7, Quartz Hill 3--Ruth Anderson had three hits, including a two-run triple, for the Spirits (2-0).

BASEBALL

L.A. Baptist 4, Western Christian 2--John Wilson pitched a three-hitter, striking out 12, in a second-round game of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Ventura 9, Agoura 4--Ryan McCann hit a three-run home run for Agoura (3-2) in a nonleague game at Ventura.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 6, Kennedy 1--The Highlanders (4-0) got straight-set victories from Chris Yoo and Evan Press at Nos. 1 and 2 singles in a Northwest Valley Conference opener.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Canoga Park d. Cleveland, 15-5, 15-9, 15-8--Ron Salamunca and Mike Scarborough each had seven kills for the Hunters (3-0) in a nonconference match.

Bell-Jeff d. Flintridge Prep, 15-13, 15-2, 15-13--Miguel Segura had 16 kills and Darius Spencer added eight kills and four aces for Bell-Jeff (3-1, 1-0) in a Santa Fe League match at Bell-Jeff.

Granada Hills d. Venice, 15-10, 15-5, 15-6--Chris Tran had 10 kills and five blocks for the Highlanders (3-0).
