Cassidy Firing Reflects Poorly on Bubb

Share

Why does Paul Bubb, a man with no previous Division I administrative or coaching experience, deserve to replace the fired Bob Hiegert as Cal State Northridge’s interim athletic director? And does he have the leadership qualities needed to move our students and athletes into the next decade? From all accounts, I would have to say no.

The firing of basketball Coach Pete Cassidy is a travesty.

We all know that wins and losses are important to any athletic program, so let’s reveal all the facts and let the community determine whether Cassidy was allowed to play on an even playing field.

Everyone realizes that recruiting is essential to a successful Division I program. Northridge’s lack of the financial resources necessary to adequately recruit student athletes--in and out of state--is a fact that has been publicly acknowledged by Bubb and everyone else in the school’s athletic program.

Northridge last season did not have an out-of-state player. Fellow American West Conference members Cal State Sacramento had three; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo had five, including the conference most valuable player.

As past president of the Northridge basketball booster club, my most fond memories include hosting the annual basketball team barbecue at my home and traveling with the team for road games. The attitude and behavior of the entire group has always been exemplary under the guidance of Coach Cassidy.

Coach, your peers know, your boosters know, and first and foremost, your past and present players know, your quality and character are second to none.
