Achterberg’s Home Run in 10th Leads Sea Kings

Ryan Achterberg hit home run to lead off the top of the 10th to give Corona del Mar a 2-1 victory over Newport Harbor in Sea View League baseball Friday at Newport Harbor.

Pitcher Chad Johnson gave up one earned run, four hits and four walks and struck out 11 in 10 innings for Corona del Mar (4-4, 1-2 in league).

Garret Nuzum pitched eight innings, giving up one earned run and striking out seven, for Newport Harbor (4-4, 0-3).

In other Sea View League games:

El Toro 12, Santa Margarita 1--The Chargers (7-3, 3-0) had 14 hits and an eight-run second inning to break the game open. Brett Vessells had three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored and Darren MacLeod (4-0) pitched six shutout innings, giving up seven hits and no walks.

Irvine 6, Woodbridge 1--Greg Zachan had a two-run single, Joey O’Toole an RBI single and Jared Flint a two-run triple in a five-run fifth for the Vaqueros (5-4, 3-0). Brian Krill pitched a three-hitter with no walks for Irvine. Woodbridge is 4-3, 2-1.

In the Century League:

Canyon 6, El Modena 5--Mike Tomarelli went two for four with a triple and two RBIs for Canyon (8-1, 3-0).

Santa Ana Valley 12, Orange 9--Edgar Rozo was two for three with three RBIs and Christian Briseno went three for four and scored three runs for Santa Ana Valley (3-6, 1-2).

Felipe Gudino was two for three with four RBIs for Orange.

In the Empire League:

Katella 8, El Dorado 6--John Baldridge had a triple and three RBIs and Hector Vazquez had two hits and an RBI for host Katella (7-1, 3-0). Brandon Downing had three hits and three RBIs for El Dorado (6-5, 2-2).

Kennedy 4, Loara 3--Jack Tucker’s three-run home run in the first inning made a winner of George Carralejo, who went the distance with seven strikeouts for host Kennedy (4-4, 1-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 4, Bolsa Grande 2--Joey Maselli pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and striking out three for Garden Grove (5-6, 2-0). Gabe Maldanado was two for three with two RBIs for the Argonauts.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 5, Santa Ana 4--Jason Martini hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to give Ocean View (4-6, 2-1) the victory. Teammate Mike Seguin added a two-run double in the third. Santa Ana (2-1 in league) scored two runs in the top of the sixth.

Servite 15, Saddleback 6--Rick Chessman pitched a complete game and went three for five with three RBIs and Dan Nevarez had two hits and four RBIs for Servite (6-2, 2-1).

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 6, Whittier Christian 2--Che Holloway had four hits and three RBIs for visiting Orange Lutheran (3-4, 1-2).

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 2, Savanna 0--Enrique Mejia threw a two-hitter with one walk and two strikeouts for host Anaheim (3-5, 1-2).

Brea Olinda 5, Magnolia 3 (9 innings)--Aaron Hough singled and later scored on Mike Ausman’s two-out infield single to give Brea Olinda (6-3, 3-0) the go-ahead run.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 6, Estancia 4--Scott Fuller was two for three with three RBIs and pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts for Aliso Niguel (4-5, 2-1).

Laguna Hills 8, Costa Mesa 0--Tony Milo pitched a one-hitter for Laguna Hills (7-3, 3-0), striking out 15 and walking four.

In the South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 5, Mission Viejo 2--Dan Davis capped a four-run first inning with a two-run homer for Capistrano Valley (6-1, 2-1). Pat Versluis drove in the first two runs with a double. Rik Currier and John DiCorpo each had two hits for the Cougars.

Mater Dei 10, San Clemente 3--Ryan Leinart went three for three with an RBI for second-ranked Mater Dei (7-1, 3-0). Mike Kolbach had two hits and four RBIs and Brett Kay had three hits and four RBIs.

Trabuco Hills 9, Dana Hills 2--Tom Kilby and Brian Thatcher each drove in two runs for host Trabuco Hills (6-2, 2-1).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 5, Edison 2--Brandon Steele (3-2) went the distance, giving up two hits and striking out six for visiting Huntington Beach (8-2, 2-1).
