In another Dole Big West tournament game:

Capistrano Valley 4, Marina 0--Rik Currier pitched a no-hitter in the consolation final for the Cougars (12-3). Currier (4-2), a junior right-hander, struck out 12 and walked two, retiring 12 batters in a row at one point.

Pat Versluis hit a two-run triple and Todd Miller, who had three hits and three steals. Miller and Currier were all-tournament selections.

In the Pride of the Coast tournament:

Lakewood 10, Santa Margarita 4--Take your choice: Santa Margarita has straightened out some flaws and is ready to jump back into the Sea View League race next week after a good run in this tournament.

Or, the Eagles still have pitching problems that need to be addressed if they are going to make a playoff run.

Both views are possible after Santa Margarita lost to Lakewood in the tournament final at Corona del Mar.

Lakewood (14-4), making its first appearance in the tournament, won its 11th in a row and 13th in 14 games.

Lakewood won by playing opportunistically. The Lancers only got six hits off three Eagle pitchers, but also had five walks, two hit batters and three stolen bases. The hits also were key ones: a three-run double by Nick Zastrow that erased a 4-1 Santa Margarita lead in the third; RBI singles by Scott Holzhauer and Augie Zepeda during a four-run fourth and a home run by Jon Weberin the sixth.

Spurred by a good tournament that included a big victory against Fountain Valley on Tuesday, Santa Margarita Coach Tip Lefebvre believes his team will be ready to take a shot at the Sea View League title.

But Lefebvre said the Eagles cannot keep doing what they did Wednesday, namely letting their pitchers squander the 4-0 second-inning lead.

“The last four-five games we were able to pitch. Today we didn’t,” Lefebvre said. “They got most of their runs from walks and hit batters, it seemed. But they also took advantage of every opportunity we gave them.”
