Cosgrove Goes Eight to Win His Eighth

Michael Cosgrove continued in a familiar role and Ara Petrosian returned to an old one as host Cypress rallied with three runs in the eighth inning and beat Fullerton, 4-3, in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Thursday.

Cosgrove, a sophomore right-hander, pitched eight innings for the victory. He improved to 8-0 and also tied the Cypress career record for victories with 17.

Cypress started the ninth leading, 4-2, but Cosgrove gave up a leadoff triple off the fence by Brad Downing to start the inning.

Petrosian, who also signed with Long Beach State Thursday, entered and gave up a run-scoring grounder to Marc Anspach and got the next two batters for his first save of the season. Petrosian had five saves last season but has been starting this season.

Much of the game was dominated by Cosgrove and Fullerton’s Scott Parsonage, both from Cerritos High. Fullerton scored twice in the sixth and led, 2-1.

Cypress’ Adam Roman singled off Parsonage’s leg to start the eighth inning. Keith Ginter was hit by a pitch for the 14th time this season. Randy Case bunted, Parsonage fielded it and threw to third just late on a call that could have gone either way.

Greg Jacobs then put first-place Cypress (26-9, 11-4) ahead, 3-2, with a single up the middle. Jacobs stole third and scored on an error to move the Cypress ahead, 4-2.

The teams meet again at noon Saturday.
