Slumping Northridge Draws a Blank in Utah

The slumping Cal State Northridge softball team continued its tailspin Friday, losing to Utah, 2-0, in the first game of a scheduled Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Salt Lake City.

The second game was rained out.

The Matadors (28-9, 8-3 in conference play), three-time defending conference champions, have lost five of seven games.

Utah (19-6, 6-4) scored in the first and second innings. Monica Jimenez (7-5) pitched a six-hitter.

Northridge pitcher Jennifer Richardson (16-5) struck out four and walked one. Six Matadors had one hit each.

Utah second baseman Cyndee Bennett, a former Glendale High standout, had two hits and a run batted in.

Antelope Valley 12, San Bernardino 2--Monica Dopson hit a two-run homer in the third inning to cap a 10-run outburst over two innings by the Marauders (19-13, 6-0) in a Foothill Conference game at Antelope Valley.

The game was called after 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run rule.

Cindy Sims had three hits and two RBIs for Antelope Valley. Angela Davison threw a two-hitter with two strikeouts.

Cal Lutheran 10--8, Redlands 0--1--The Regals (24-1, 18-0) pummeled the Bulldogs (14-14, 8-8) in both games of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Redlands, running their streak of consecutive conference victories to 24.

Heidi Stevens (11-1) threw a two-hitter and struck out six in the opener, which was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

In the second game, Aimee Snider had three hits while Stevens and Beckkah Snider each had two hits and an RBI.

Kathy Proffitt (7-0) pitched a six-hitter.

MEN’S TRACK

Moorpark 78 1/2, Bakersfield 67 1/2, Ventura 35--Tom Farnbach won the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds and placed second in the 200 in 21.7 to help host Moorpark (9-0, 9-0) clinch the Western State Conference regular-season title.

WOMEN’S TRACK

Bakersfield 75, Ventura 57, Moorpark 38--Dolores Tuimoloau won the shotput at 47-6 1/2 and finished second behind teammate Kim Righetti in the discus, but Ventura (8-1, 8-1) suffered its first Western State Conference loss of the season in the meet at Moorpark.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 63, Rio Hondo 11--Aaron Robinson won the 200 and 500 freestyle events for Valley (4-3, 4-3) in a Western State Conference meet.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 96, Rio Hondo 12--Andrea Loperena won the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle for Valley (6-1, 6-1) in a Western State Conference meet.
