Leuenberger Pitches Canyon Past Santa Ana Valley

Jeff Leuenberger pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as eighth-ranked Canyon beat host Santa Ana Valley, 2-1, in a Century League baseball game Thursday.

Brad Schaefer had a run-scoring double to tie it, 1-1, for Canyon (16-3, 8-1). He had an RBI single in the sixth to put Canyon ahead, 2-1.

In the Express League:

Rolling Hills Prep 17, Claremont 14--Ryan Cronkite had two hits and four RBIs for Claremont.

In nonleague baseball:

Heritage Christian 23, L.A. Pilgrim 4--Heritage Christian’s Paul Caffrey hit his 10th triple of the season to tie a Southern Section record. Caffrey was five for six with five RBIs for the Patriots (9-6).

In Pacific Coast League golf:

Aliso Niguel 228, Laguna Beach 247--Mike Kendall shot five-over 41 at El Niguel for Aliso Niguel (7-1 in league). The victory sets up Tuesday’s match against Estancia at Mesa Verde for the Pacific Coast League title. Estancia is 8-0 in league.

University 199, Laguna Hills 212--Ron Won and Bill Bodensteiner each shot two-over 38 at Rancho San Joaquin for University (11-4, 4-4). Mark Hancock shot 38 for Laguna Hills (5-7, 3-5).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 188, El Toro 220--Bryan Walley shot par 36 and Greg Pittenger, Steve Wagner, Tucker Brown and Kelly Craig each shot 38 on the North course at Coto de Caza for Santa Margarita (13-1, 7-1). El Toro is 10-4, 5-4.

In Century League boys’ tennis:

Foothill 10, El Modena 8--Nick Mucha and Andy Fischel swept in doubles, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2, for visiting Foothill (6-7, 3-2).

In the Golden West League:

Servite 13, Saddleback 5--Ryan Moore swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Brock Heiman swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for visiting Servite (11-5, 8-0), which clinched its second consecutive league title.

Ocean View 9, Santa Ana 9 (Ocean View wins on games, 88-64)--Paul Choi remained undefeated, winning, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, in singles for Ocean View (9-5, 4-3).

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 13, Santa Margarita 5--Tyler Smith and Tyler Call won, 7-6, 7-6, 6-2, in doubles to help lift third-ranked Woodbridge (11-4, 5-2) past No. 7 Santa Margarita.

Newport Harbor 11, Irvine 7--Geoff Abrams swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 for Newport Harbor (6-7, 4-3).

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 10, Edison 8--Brian Geddes and Samir Vora swept at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2, for Los Alamitos (10-1, 7-0).

Fountain Valley 14, Marina 4--Tom Vota swept his sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, for Fountain Valley.

In Olympic League boys’ volleyball:

Calvary Chapel 3, Cerritos Valley Christian 1--Jason Mandall had 17 kills for Calvary Chapel in a 8-15, 15-7, 15-13, 15-1 victory.

Whittier Christian 3, Ontario Christian 0--Kyle Hedwall had 18 kills for visiting Whittier Christian, which won, 15-2, 15-11, 15-11.
