Brea Wins in Tennis Tournament

The Brea Olinda boys edged Sunny Hills, 20-18, to win the team championship of the Brea Olinda Invitational tennis tournament Saturday afternoon at Brea Olinda High. Aliso Niguel was third with 15 points and Burbank finished fourth with 13.

The Wildcats’ Ben Springer defeated Burbank’s Rafi Hovanessian, 6-2, 6-1, to take the No. 1 singles title. Tony Lin and Hien Ta of Brea Olinda teamed to beat Matt Baker and Oliver Lao of Burbank, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, to win the No. 1 doubles championship.

In the Canyon Team Tennis Challenge:

Garden Grove 43, Santa Margarita 29--The Argonauts’ Andro Ignacio helped his team win in the most-games-won format by taking No. 1 singles, 8-3. Garden Grove’s Brian Tran and Nam Tran won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1.

In Academy League baseball:

Liberty Christian 3, Capistrano Valley 2--Ray Cook pitched a three-hitter and struck out 16 for Liberty Christian (9-4, 3-1). Cook gave up two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.

At the plate, Cook was two for three with a triple and two RBIs.

In Sunset League baseball:

Fountain Valley 14, Edison 3--Robert Alvarez went three for five with two doubles and five RBIs for visiting Fountain Valley (15-5, 7-2).

At the Marlborough Invitational gymnastic championships:

Brea Olinda wins--Shaunna DeSimnone won the all-around with a score of 37.3 as Brea Olinda finished first in the 14th Marlborough Invitational. San Diego Mt. Carmel finished second.

In Century League softball:

Foothill 3, El Modena 0--Top-ranked El Modena’s offense was led by four triples, one each by Jamie Clark, Amie Barnes, Lauren Bauer and Marie Gieron. Gieron also recorded her 12th victory of the season for the Knights (19-2, 3-0).
