Saddleback’s Golf Coach Wins 300th Conference Match
Bill Cunerty, the Saddleback golf coach, got his 300th conference victory as the Gauchos beat Cypress and Golden West in an Orange Empire Conference match Monday at the Tijeras Creek golf course in Mission Viejo.
Lee Kinney and Joachim Hassan each shot a one-under 71 for Saddleback, which totaled 380. Cypress had 411 and Golden West was at 437.
Saddleback finished the conference season with a 14-0 record. It was the 14th conference title in 15 seasons for Cunerty’s teams. His conference record is 300-29.
In the Southern California playoffs:
Golden West wins twice--Jeff Carlucci had 17 kills as the Rustlers beat San Diego Mesa, 15-12, 15-6, 15-6, to earn a berth in the state tournament Friday at Sacramento American River. Golden West, the defending state champion, beat El Camino, 13-15, 15-8, 15-7, 15-9, earlier Monday.
In Orange Empire Conference softball:
Rancho Santiago 4, Fullerton 2--Host Fullerton (30-9, 14-4) fell out of first-place tie with Cypress, which beat Riverside, 7-1, Monday.
Sheryl Anderson recorded her 27th victory to break the Rancho Santiago single-season record set by Sandy Martin in 1986.
Anderson’s RBI single it, 2-2, in the seventh and Kristi Bolle followed with a two-run single to for the Dons (29-16-1, 13-5).
