Currier Leads Capistrano Valley Past Mater Dei, 5-1

Rik Currier struck out 13 and pitched a five-hitter to lead visiting Capistrano Valley, ranked second in Orange County, to a 5-1 victory over top-ranked Mater Dei in a South Coast League baseball game Friday.

It was the first league loss for Mater Dei (19-3, 12-1 in league), which scored its only run in the first.

Currier had three hits and teammate Pat Versluis was two for two for the Cougars (19-4, 10-3). Dan Davis and Chad Veltz hit home runs for Capistrano Valley.

In another South Coast League game:

Mission Viejo 10, Trabuco Hills 7 (8)--Gerry Delin hit a three-run homer in the eighth for Mission Viejo (9-14, 5-8). The Diablos’ Commander King had four hits, including his first home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 13, Capistrano Valley Christian 7--Jason Jarvis hit two home runs for Capistrano Valley Christian (4-12, 3-4). St. Margaret’s improved to 8-5-1, 6-2.

In the Century League:

Canyon 2, Orange 1--Senior Shane Gandy hit his first home run of the season with one out in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie for host Canyon (20-3, 12-1), which clinched its third consecutive league championship.

Villa Park 7, El Modena 0--Evan McGinnis went four for four with three RBIs and two runs scored for Villa Park (13-9-1, 8-5), which clinched a playoff berth.

In the Empire League:

Cypress 7, Loara 3--Phil Seibel gave up four hits in six innings and improved to 10-0 for third-ranked Cypress (19-4, 11-2).

El Dorado 5, Kennedy 0--Jordan DeJong (8-3) pitched a complete game, striking out eight and giving up only two hits for El Dorado (15-9, 10-3).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 10, La Habra 4--Greg Johnson had four RBIs for Fullerton (18-4-1, 12-0-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 6, Santiago 0--Tom Clark and Gerald Laird combined to pitch a four-hit shutout as La Quinta (20-5, 10-0) clinched at least a tie for its fourth consecutive league title. The victory also gave the Aztecs their ninth 20-win season in the last 10 years.

Pacifica 3, Bolsa Grande 2 (8 innings)--John Ames walked, stole second base and scored the winning run from third on a one-out error for host Pacifica (14-8-1, 9-2), which remained in second. Bolsa Grande is 15-5-1, 7-3.

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 10, Brea Olinda 4--Rich Michaelson went four for four and drove in four runs for Magnolia (16-4, 11-2), which clinched the league title.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 5, Laguna Hills 3--Scott Fuller had two hits and two RBIs for Aliso Niguel (7-11, 5-8), which upset 10th-ranked Laguna Hills (18-4, 12-1). Tony Milo hit two home runs for Laguna Hills.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 11, Irvine 4--Travis Vessells had three hits and three RBIs and Mark Smith had two hits, three RBIs and two stolen bases for El Toro (9-3-1).

Corona del Mar 6, Santa Margarita 5--Kevin Stuart had two doubles and one RBI and pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief to earn the save for host Corona del Mar (13-9, 7-6).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 5, Edison 3--Brad Cresse hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game for Marina (10-12, 3-10).
